20 years of Microsoft Windows
Now in its 20th year, Microsoft Windows continues to go from strength to strength. It wasn’t all plain sailing though.
The first independent version of Microsoft Windows, version 1.0 was released on November 20, 1985 and achieved little popularity. The project was briefly codenamed “Interface Manager” before the windowing system was developed. Rowland Hanson, the head of marketing at Microsoft, convinced the company that the name Windows would be more appealing to customers* – it’s difficult to argue with that!
